While the history and her reasoning of her marriage breakdown are necessary I did find myself skipping sections to read the next chapter. I think the way Gilbert has structured the book (like a japa mala, therefore into 108 sections or tales) is fantastic and makes for very easy reading. Her total immersion in the local life of wherever she was living and her subsequent descriptions of those people and places reads better than any travel manual. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of Italian restaurants and people and the relaxed lifestyle of the Balinese. I don’t think any reader would not like to go to these places after reading this book!
